Fatima, c.616-33, was the only daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, the wife of Ali, and in Muslim tradition, the ancestor of the Fatimid caliphs and of the imams of the Shiite branch of Islam. She is revered by all Muslims and is the subject of many legends; the Shiites often show her a devotion equivalent to that accorded the Virgin Mary in Christianity.
