The councils of Constantinople were four ecumenical Councils of the Christian church, held between the 4th and the 9th centuries. In the year 380 the emperors Gratian and Theodosius I decided to convoke this council to counter the Arians, and also to judge the case of Maximus the Cynic, bishop of Constantinople.
