Gethsemane is the place on the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem where Jesus Christ was betrayed by Judas Iscariot and arrested while praying with his disciples after the Last Supper. We can understand the vehement earnestness and sincerity with which Peter protested against of any failure on his part. But what, we may reverently ask, was the cause of this sorrow unto death of the Lord Jesus Christ? St. Sylvia of Aquitania (385-388) relates that on Holy Thursday the procession coming down from the Mount of Olives made a station at "the beautiful church" built on the spot where Jesus underwent the Agony. A fragmentary account of a pilgrimage in the fourth century, preserved by Peter the Deacon (1037), mentions "a grotto at the place where the Jews the Savior captive".
