Donatism was an heretical Christian movement of the 4th and 5th centuries, which claimed that the validity of the sacraments depends on the moral character of the minister. The Donatist schism in Africa began in 311 and flourished just one hundred years, until the conference at Carthage in 411, after which its importance waned. The later excesses of the Circumcellions show that Mensurius had some ground for the severe line he took. It seems that after violence had begun, the envoys ordered the Donatists to unite with the Church whether they willed or no. This last method of argument was found to be of great practical value, and many conversions were now taking place, largely on account of the false position in which the Donatists had placed themselves.
